Our upcoming photography events
August, 13 at 12PM we’ll have a meetup at Photoplex Studios, called “Studio Product Photography shout-out in Alpharetta”

Creative product shot: cosmetic brush set by akex koloskov
We’ve got this idea for a workshop-like Meetup dedicated to product photography.
We’re going to rent a large studio in Alpharetta, where we can have up to 4-5 hour long Meetup full of shooting. This time it will be less like a masterclass and more of a collaboration between us, working as a group on the most “problematic” products to shoot.
To make it more interesting, we’ll be asking some of the participants to bring with them one product that you want to improve your photography with. The size limitation is the subject must not be more that 3 feet on it’s largest side and no heavier than 10 pounds. We’ll have white, gray and black backgrounds to shoot your subject on.
We can fit up to 15 photographers at this Meetup and the first five who will confirm their attendance by purchasing a ticket can bring the product they wish to photograph.
This won’t be a commercial workshop, rather that we want to get together and share our knowledge and experience. The price is only $50 and its simply to cover a day of studio rent, cleaning and for some snacks for all of us to enjoy.
We are planning on videotaping the event and most likely it will be on sale at my blog. If we choose to make it available for purchase, all attendees will get a complimentary copy of the video for attending.
To join, please register at our meetup group: Technical Secrets of Studio Photography
We look forward to seeing you at the Meetup!
Update: I didn’t specify the gear and other things you may need to have for this meetup, so here’s what I’ll be bringing:
I’ll have a shooting table with various light modifiers ready to use. Up to 5 strobes (PCB) will be serving us, as well as tripods, my Canon 5DMKII mounted on a focusing rails and a laptop. I’ll be shooting tethered, so we all can see the immediate results.
You can try to shot tethered with your own camera. However it might be hard to connect different cameras to my laptop (it may not have specific driver) and I suggest that we’ll shoot to a one “main” camera (the one connected to a laptop), while you can always take images with your own camera shooting side-by-side with the “main” one. We’ll just need to add a flash trigger to it.
The main purpose of the meetup is to troubleshoot and learn how to build the lighting for various subjects. This is the most important thing in product photography, IMO. The camera and lens don’t matter quite as much as good lighting (as long as lens has appropriate magnification ratio , i.e macro).
All the images we’ll get will be shared among the participants, please have a flash drive with you if you want to bring them home.
This is what I have in mind. Let me know what you guys are thinking about this. Thank you!
Alex
P.S as for 07/23/2011, less then 2 days after announcement we’ve already sold 9 tickets! That means there’s only 6 tickets left. If you plan to come, I suggest you sign up before they’re all gone.
Update: as of 07/29/2011 we got 13 participants. Only 2 spots are left!
