This type of shots is not what I usually do, but when my friends asked if I can do their seniors promo shoot (never heard of such type before:-) my answer was: yes!
I always glad to host any of my good friends in the studio: I can always test new gear or learn some new technique while working with them. This time I eventually got an opportunity to test my DIY battery power pack (aka Vagabond II I’ve assembled recently) in real life situation, as we planed to do several informal shot outside of the studio.
After we were done with formal (most boring for me, not much formality left in my brain part of the shot in a studio, I took 3 Paul. C Buff monolights outside, on our backyard. It was close enough to use an extension cord to power them up, but the idea was to test my DYI Vagabond.
Two WL X1600 units and one AB400 were used. The power settings was close to a maximum: I was shooting at 1/250 sec F8, ISO100. At such exposure ambient light did not play any significant role in that shade under the trees.

This is a half a year old photo-shoot, but I would like to share the outcome here, the post is following this ONE. I was not able to release the details of the shot due to a restriction from a client, and now they seems to be OK with it
Shirley Corriher the one of our most enjoyable customers. This time she showed us how to cook. The previous 4 days photoshot was only about the food, and now we did few portraits in the kitchen as well.
I do not understand modern black and white photography, did you know this? It is like cutting off one dimension from the photography world, and I always wanted to have more… more dynamic range, more sensitivity, more colors! That day we tried to expand our usual color palette 5 times more: 5 different colored lights were used in one portrait photo-session.
Yes, I am talking about color gels. In most cases I use them to change a background color or add color accents to a scene, but this time we went wild: about 6 sharp, directional light sources was used to paint a model’s portrait. No softboxes, umbrellas or other softeners were used, pure light from 7” reflectors covered by honeycomb grids.
The idea was hanging in the air for a quite some time, and now Kevi Redding, beautiful young singer I was working before, asked me to do portrait for her using colored lighting.

I’ve enjoyed working with her (I find much easier to work with artistic person) and after we were done and she left, I continued to play with setup and made several shots of my lovely wife: Continue reading »
It was a late sunny afternoon in North Atlanta, when we had a nice walk and talk with Irina, a good friend of us. I had my camera and 2 Canon 580EX flashes attached like this, sun was one hour away from a horizon, and full set of kids jumping around
Several days ago we had a chance to do a photoshot for good friend of ours, Lana Kravtsova (dreamfollowers.com). She is true positive thinker and highly motivated business coach as well as a great model:-) I was surprised how easy it was to work with her.
She was needed a few headshots for social media and business card, and I’ve used lighting to show her bright personality.
Did you ever feel what a frozen chicken feels ? I recently had a chance to get an idea
I was hired to shoot annual winners for Refrigiwear, Inc. These tough guys are working in a huge warehouse refrigerators and freezers, 25F – 0F temperatures around! It was quite refreshing environment to work I am glad my Canon 1Ds Mark III was happy: no sensor noise at all, working on 200-400 ISO settings.

We had our very good friends visiting us for a 1.5 weeks. That was a fun! Have not seen them for about 10 years. They are still very nice and creative guys, we had a few (unfortunately) photo sessions done. The rest of the time was spent together in St.Pete, FL with vine, ocean and sun:-)
