This week I’ve got 2 additions to my studio gear I was waiting for a long time: heavy, solid and huge Fatif studio stand and amazingly fast workstation laptop, Lenovo W700ds. Both of them are really monstrous creatures:
Fatif studio stand:
Old, by still strong as my red pepper Ukrainian vodka I brought 8 years ago and still haven’t tried: about 180 lb heavy, 8 feet tall, it feels like an WWII cannon:-)
Recently I have a very interesting experience working for Janis Wilson Hughes, shooting her sculptures for an exhibition. It was interesting because I did not shoot art pieces before, most of my photography was commercial products.
There is the same requirements in both art and product photography : to show the best of the subject, its texture and shape at the best angle.
When I’ve received and opened the boxes with the art, I’ve already knew how I was going to shoot them: soft light (stripe boxes) from left, right and top with a nice gray gradient (spot from a 30° honeycomb grid to a charcoal gray paper). Below the outcome, enjoy:
Art reproduction photography: Janise Hughes masterpiece
Having 3 lights hitting the subject with the sharp angle gives me flexibility to choose from more textured or more brighter and shadowless look.
The spot on a background was necessary for the first art piece, wire mesh without a frame. I left it on for the rest two pieces, as it added one more dimension to them. It would be easy to crop the frame, when needed, but Janis agreed with me: background spot was a good thing to do:-) Continue reading »

The Photography Master Cup is a global online awards show recognizing excellence in color photography. This celebrated event shines a spotlight on the finest professional and non-professional photographers and is presented by International Color Awards.
I was doing a blu-ray backup for our HDD arrays and found several interesting photos, dated between 6 and 9 years ago. I would like to share few of them here.
Quite often I read comments like “what camera should I have to get photos like this, what lighting, etc”. My answer is always the same: stop thinking what you do not have, just get camera and start shooting. Look what can be done with almost no lighting ($30 strobe is what you call lighting?), the cameras was far from modern DSLR too.
I’ll be going from the oldest ones, trying to recall how I did each of them…

When I need to fill my photographer’s brain with new ideas, inspire myself for something innovative and edgy, I usually ask my wife for a few links: She always has amazing list of portfolios around the world to look at. When I look at amazing, unusual and beautiful work, ideas start popping up like a popcorn:-)
Now she decided to form all such bookmarks into a blog, so you, my friend, can enjoy the same feeling.
Photographers, architects , designers and all who loves style, beauty and sophistication can find something there: www.kapreez.com

Our first workshop just happened last Sunday! Hurray!
Atlanta photographer workshop class
Many thanks to all participants, I am sure it was very enjoyable and interesting for all of us:-)
Workshop lasted for 4 hours, during this time we have covered a basic’s of studio gear, shooting techniques, had a master class and an actual photoshoot session for each participant.
At the end we had nice party time:-)
We always had a kitchen in the studio, but was never actually shooting in it. It was mainly used for food preparation and styling, occasional party cooking, etc. When I worked with Shirley Corriher, for a first time (see the result) , we used a kitchen a lot, most of the cakes, biscuits and other sweeties which I do not know how to call, was made in our kitchen.

There are 3 types of photographers by my own classification:
1. Great businessmen who are very successful on selling their work, but I do not understand nor like photography they do. Another words, they know how to sell, but I see nothing which can inspire me.
2. Unknown photographers, they have amazing portfolios, but they are known by very limited numbers of people, so there is not much chances I can find them online. (Know one? Let us know!)
3. Successful photographers who had achieved amazing results in photography and also highly successful on promoting and selling their work. This is who inspires me a lot, I like the clean and crisp style and technically challenged work they do.
Most of them extensively use photo editors to enhance and finish the images, all of them commercial photographers , mostly food , advertisement and fashion. All of them has very bright and professional looking web portfolio.
As I’ve mentioned before, I only selected photographers who work in the same area as myself, there are more great artists around us, but I was learning from these:
